1. What are those ugly black stains on the roof?

Those ugly black stains are mold, algae, moss and fungi, alive and growing, feeding on the minerals within the asphalt of the roof shingle.  It is most noticeable on the north side of a building, where the sun does not rapidly dry the surface, then spreads by winds to other areas. 

2. Why is it happening?

Shingles today are made with extenders like limestone, cellulose and various wood products and less petroleum and felt.  Today’s shingles last longer, but are more vulnerable to organic growth. 

3. How are the stains affecting my shingles?

These growing organisms on your roof are consuming and decomposing your shingles.
